Do you know whistling village....

Every village has some story. Something interesting or different from others. Kongthong is village in east khasi hills of Meghalay. It's known as singing or whistling village in Meghalay. In this village each native has unique whistling lullaby names for ladies and gents, children. They call each other by this lullaby. Interesting to know about this unique tradition.  Mother creates a singing tune for her newborn.
Kongthong people belong to seng khasi tribe and speak khasi language . The tiny village in Khat-ar shnong area has population about 700 people.  The main way of living is agriculture and animal husbandry. Dotted with quaint huts surrounded by gardens and betel trees, the village located on a cliff-edge boasts of breathtaking scenery all around.
This age-old tradition of whistling has been carried on since time immemorial. No one in the village was able to tell  when this tradition started.  The people belive in unseen bad spirits from the nearby forests. If these spirits hear the name of a person, then the person falls ill. So in order to prevent this, the villagers had devised this method of calling each other by a tune. Of course, these are only folklore.
The Khasis had always followed animist religion where they prayed nature and natural objects like trees, stones and others. Then the Christian Missionaries arrived in Meghalaya and converted a majority of the Khasis to Christianity. With Christianity, English was also introduced. The local people did not understand the meaning of most words, but to sound important, they would name their children using the English words. Majority of the names are inspired by Biblical words while many parents name their children after famous personalities as well. If you wish this village on your bucket list you need two special days for it.
Whether you visit this village or not but vacation in Meghalay will give you cherishing memories.  If you're joining us for Diwali group tour you will enjoy cherry blossom also which is treat for eyes.  So get ready  soon for a pleasing experience with Kaustubh Travels.
