Marvellous architecture in Kullu, Naggar Castle

The small hamlet of Naggar is completely dominated by the 15th century Naggar Castle. Naggar remained the capital of the Kullu kings for almost 1500 years before Kullu town was made the capital in the mid-1800s.

Naggar Castle is built in the unique traditional pahari style (Kathkuni); the castle has a central courtyard and there are exquisite wood carvings and arched balconies with serene views of the Beas Valley. The shock-bearing unique method of construction had this structure withstanding the earthquake of 1905, when most of the region was devastated.
The traditional local architecture comprises of walls composed of alternate layers of wooden beams and proportionate stone. Essentially, the whole building including doors and windows has been fixed without the use of any metal including iron, as explained by the manager maintaining the place.
The ancient Castle in Naggar has mesmerising and breath taking views of the surrounding mountain ranges in the valley of Kullu. Settled amidst the sights of River Beas, villages on the river bank, dense cedar woodlands and the snow covered Rohtang Pass, this medieval castle was constructed by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu in around 1460 AD and it had been the seat of the Kullu Rajas for many years. It was converted into a rest house a hundred years back.
The historical legacy of the village is reflected by the castle as this beautiful fort is a fine example of the amalgamation of the western and Himalayan styles of architecture with its alternating pattern of stone and timber.

The Naggar Castle boasts of stupendous architectural features. Fireplaces, fitting staircases and magnificent stone and wood works grace the castle's interiors. There are three small shrines within the premises of the castle, each of which holds immense religious importance. The Naggar Castle also has incredible art pieces on display which are a delight for art lovers. It also houses the wooden Jagatipatt Temple in its complex and is home to the Roerich Art Gallery as well which exhibits paintings of the Russian artist, Nicholas Roerich. The gallery has preserved original creations of the Himalayas done by Roerich, his quotations and notes left by his visitors. Visitors can also take traditional items like wall hangings, coasters and artefacts bearing imprints of Roerich's paintings as souvenirs.
You will definitely fall in love with Kullu after watching mesmerising beauty of the hamlet.
