Ladakhi Marriage
When Ladkhi a boy turns about 20 and starts earning the boy's parents approach to the girl 's parents. Usually the girl is younger than boy by two to three years. The parents ask each others for match . If things are acceptable lamas are consulted for auspicious date.
The marriage ceremony begins late in the evening and lasts for whole night. The village families arrive bringing food for wedding feast. The groom will often dance and drink Chang . The bride will sit in kitchen. The bride and groom both are presented with ceremonial khatas and sums of money. By the sunrise the bride is led to to her new home ( groom's family) . The bride initially refuse for food and shares food with groom. The bride is shown her new home. The ceremony continues for long time with delicious local food and Chang.
If girl's family is wealthy or doesn't have son to their home, then groom will carry on girl's family name.
A different type of marriage called Skus-te-Khyong-ches or "to bring by theft", is conducted when a person is marrying for a second time (due to death or divorce) or the individuals involved are poor. The bride is quietly brought to her new home and several days later, relatives and friends are invited for a meal and the public is considered informed of the marriage.
